Book of Assiah. Volume 3: Presumed Guilty

This volume begins with the explanation of sempai Kira Sakuya’s* origins: Kira Sakuya died 11 years ago at age 7. A wandering spirit made a pact with young Sakuya in which the child allows the spirit to inhabit his body (still keeping his own spirit alive) BUT the bodiless spirit has to make sure Sakuya’s father doesn’t love him/them anymore so when the spirit leaves and the boy dies he won’t be sad (this condition is posed by the boy.) This wandering spirit became immortal when Rosiel’s blood spilled onto it during the rebellion. It/he decided to descend to Assiah to follow Alexiel’s reincarnations by taking over the body of someone close to her. In Alexiel’s previous existence prior to Setsuna, she was a high class hooker. She had a secret lover who ended up getting found out who was “executed” but the spirit had made the same pact as with Kira, so the lover was able to return to the prostitute, who had been beaten by her master for her act. The lover was a samurai and Alexiel became awakened and recognized the spirit within the warrior. She asked him/it to kill her with his own hand instead of allowing another painful death to kill her off. The sword the samurai used, Sjiramui, became an astral sword and now the sword-spirit would follow Alexiel. So, Kira is the sword, which was used to kill Kato.

Meanwhile, Sara is preparing to leave for London. Kurai doesn’t want her to go, but Sara is determined and gives her a red glass ring that Setsuna had won for her during a festival in their childhood. Setsuna is being interrogated by the police regarding the deaths of Kato and Yoji. Kurai bursts in and convinces him to catch Sara at the airport before she leaves for good. As he is running, he thinks, “I knew…why Alexiel was reluctant to awaken. She wants to remain human.” He manages to get to Sara, confessing his love. They run away as Kira is keeping the cops distracted with fireworks, and a confession of: “I killed Kato.” (Which is technically true…) He presents them with the murder weapon, the Sword in material form. As Setsuna runs by him he throws cash and a box of earrings to him. Earlier, Setsuna’s earring had shattered; turns out Kira had pierced his ear when they were younger and the earring contained an amulet that kept Alexiel from becoming awakened by causing Setsuna to pass out at the sight and smell of blood, since Alexiel is really blood-hungry and if awakened during a fight, would commit murder.

Heaven – The child angel Metatron has a dream in which Rosiel kills him and his guardian Sevothtarte. Metatron is clairvoyant. Lord Sevothtarte keeps him on sleep-inducing (opiate) type drugs to keep him quiet. Metatron says, “Sandalphon, my dead younger brother…makes me see these…dreams. He’s angry he was never born. Unless you let me see Jibril, I won’t take that medicine! [dope].” So they go to a garden where the archangel Jibril sits in a coma-like state. Zaphikel follows. Raziel follows him (unknown to Sevothtarte.) Zaphikel tells Sevothtarte he thinks Metatron wanting to see Jibril “adorable” to which Sevy (Metatron’s pet name for the lord) replies, “Him? He’s the same as the others…An abominable subspecies assembled by the creator using the devil’s medicine and science…created through the forbidden practice of generic manipulation.” Since Metatron has been given control over the Angelic throne (Heaven overall) there have been internal power struggles.

Assiah – Kira is arrested. Arachne arrives, puts the cops to sleep and retrieves the Sword. Kira says it helped it helped him in a previous life, and more is added to his back story: The samurai’s sword was all ready a holy sword, “Having drawn the blood of over one thousand virtuous high priests it had become an astral sword. …I [the spirit that follows Alexiel] sealed the sword with my blood so I could call on it at any time.” Later on Arachne reports to Kurai in Gehenna: “I don’t understand the part about the blood stain [on Kira.] When Alexiel injured Rosiel in the battle…they were the only two there. So how could blood spill on him?” Kurai does not respond as the Dragon Prophet Jade is telling her that Tokyo and the world will be destroyed the next day, July X, 1999. Reference to “Angelmore.”

Meanwhile, Sara and Setsuna are living life as lovers. Kirie is determined to kill Sara, Setsuna, or both since Rosiel is extremely angry with her for letting them get away at the airport. Katan stops her again and tells her his own story: He is actually Rosiel’s child; in as much as Rosiel gave him a corporeal form and a name. “I was once a Grigor [sic] …the lowest of all [angels].” In the past, they had sexual relations with humans and were punished with non-corporeal forms, and used as expendable slaves. This Grigori later christened Katan was aware of the Grigori fate and was heard lamenting by Rosiel, who then gave him his current form. Katan studied, angelic politics I assume, and entered Etemenanki, as that was the only way to come in contact with Rosiel again. He tells Kirie this to explain that he truly knows Rosiel best and she is currently throwing her life away in a futile attempt to win his favor. But as she is in love with Rosiel she won’t hear of it.

Setsuna is plagued by the weight of his angelic power and Kira taking the fall for him so the couple returns to Tokyo to attempt to exonerate Kira. The night before they leave Kira comes to Setsuna in a dream, telling him to forget all this otherworldly stuff and his probable fate in jail and enjoy his new life with Sara, but it is of no use. Back in Tokyo, Kirie tricks them into entering an abandoned warehouse. She aims her “aura raver” device, which concentrates her astral force into a deadly beam, at Sara. Setsuna pushes Kirie over and becomes her next target. The beam is aimed for him but Sara jumps in front and is killed. Naturally, Setsuna is infuriated and allows Alexiel’s power to be released, coving Tokyo. A voice (possibly Kira, or Adam Kadmon) says, “Will you destroy the world, Setsuna?”

*Surnames here are placed after the given name; in the book, as in Japan, the family name is said first, such as “Sakuya Kira.” But I have reversed them for the ease of the Western reader.
